Do You Need to Apply for a Schengen Visa at the Italy Consulate?

How to get an appointment at the Italy embassy in New York?

You need to make an online appointment with the Italian embassy before you apply for Schengen visa since Italian embassy do not allow walk-ins.

You need to make sure that the name that you provide in the form, and the name in your passport is exactly the same.

You need to fill in details such as your name, residence, email, and citizenship. Once you fill the form given above, the automated system will send you a mail. In that email, you will get instructions to activate your account.

As soon as your account is activated, you can access the appointment system with the password and username provided to you. Choose the date and time slot suitable for you and book your appointment.

If you cannot find an appointment, you need to check the booking system every day at 6 PM, so that cancelled appointments become available.

If you don’t need your appointment any more, make sure to cancel it so that other users can occupy that slot.

Once you’ve got your application, you need to take a printout of your Schengen visa application and head out to the New York visa office, with your original passport and the other required documents mentioned below.

If you are planning to visit other Schengen countries, Italy should be the country where you will be spending the most number of days. In case you are spending an equal number of days in other countries, Italy will be marked as your port of entry.

Documents needed for Italy visa at the New York consulate

All documents should be presented in the original.

Here is a list of the documents that you will need to apply for an Italy visa:

  • Passport
  • Photographs
  • Permanent Residence Permit card
  • Completed Schengen visa form
  • Flight itinerary
  • Hotel bookings
  • Schengen visa insurance
  • Proof of sustenance
  • Cover letter
  • Letter of employment(if employed)
  • Company registration(if self-employed)
  • Letter from college (for students)

Passport: The original copy of your passport will be taken by the consulate authorities to process it. On the appointment date, the applicant needs to bring a prepaid envelope (that contains the required barcode/tracking number or stamps) and a xerox of the same.

Photographs: Photographs should be provided as per the visa application specifications.

Also, the Visa office accepts prepaid priority envelopes only from the United States Postal Service. They do not accept envelopes from private couriers. Once the process is done they will send your passport back to you through mail.

Please note that all the applications that do not meet the requirements are rejected.  If that is the case, you need to make a new appointment through the system.

If you are not a United States citizen, when you apply for a visa, you need to submit a copy of the document that allows you to legally stay in the U.S. They may include: A U.S long-term visa excluding B1/B2, Permanent U.S resident card, 1-797, resident alien card and I-20. Also, the document that you are willing to provide must have a validity of at least three months beyond the last day of your trip to Italy or the Schengen area.

A flight itinerary or a Schengen visa reservation is required. This is the most preferred way of submitting a visa application as you don’t have to buy actual flight tickets. You will end up losing a lot of money if your visa is not approved.

France Consulate

Your travel itinerary : you MUST BOOK your airline ticket but do not purchase until the visa has been approved.

Spain consulate

Proof of sustenance in the form of credit cards and travel cards to prove that you can sustain financially in Italy.

A personal cover letter explaining your purpose of visit in detail along with your travel itinerary. This cover letter should talk about your complete travel plan and also mention the documents you are submitting to the concerned embassy.

If the applicant is under 18 years old

If the applicant is under 18 years old :
→ copy of his/her birth certificate + certified translation if the document is not in French or English

If the applicant is under 18 years old and travelling without his parents :
→ notarized copy of his/her birth certificate + certified translation if the document is not in French or English
→ notarized parental authorization from both parents or from the parent exercising full custody of the child according to the divorce decree (a certified copy of the divorce decree must be provided) + copies of both parents passports

If the applicant is under 18 years old and travelling with only one parent :
→ notarized copy of his/her birth certificate + certified translation if the document is not in French or English
→ notarised parental authorisation from the non-travelling the parent + copy of his passport

What is the Schengen Visa Fee for Italy visa at the New York consulate?

The visa fees for Italy visa at the New York consulate is EUR 60 ($ 72). But there are other alternate costs for Schengen visa especially if you do not want to make flight & hotel bookings in advance since you are not guaranteed of visa.

Can You Apply for Italy Schengen Visa from the US if You Hold a B1/B2 Visa?

No, if you are in the US with a B1 or B2 visa, you cannot apply for an Italian visa from the US. You can do so only from the country whose citizen you are.

Can I apply via e-mail?

All applicants need to visit the office in person.

Passports will be returned exclusively by e-mail. On the day of the appointment, the applicant MUST bring a self-addressed, prepaid envelope (prepaid labels with a barcode or stamps + tracking number) and a photocopy of it.

The Visa Office will accept only prepaid priority envelopes from the U.S. Postal Service (no FedEx, no UPS).

Applicants for all visas must also present the Declaration for Mailing Passports duly filled out.

Are passport copies accepted?

The visa office does not accept photocopies of passports. You need to carry your original passport with you.

Is making an appointment necessary?

The office works only by appointment. When you apply for your visa, you’ll get to choose a date and time convenient to you for your appointment.

What are the office hours?

The office hours are from 9 AM to 12: 30 PM and it will operate from Monday to Thursday.

Can I pay in check or card?

The visa fee is acceptable only by cash or money order. The money order should be directed to Consulate General of Italy.

Does all Schengen Visa get granted for 90 days?

No, Schengen visa is not granted for 90 days, sometimes you will get visa only for the number of days that you present in your travel itinerary and your flight & hotel bookings.

Is it compulsory to give a photo?

Yes, you need to provide a passport size photo, which is recent. The photo should be as per the general visa application requirements.

How long will the visa procession take?

It usually takes between two to fifteen days. The process is governed by law, and the timing depends upon the nationality of the applicant. Visa officers have no role to play at all. It is better to apply three weeks prior to the date of visit.

How do I know if my visa is ready?

Processing of your visa takes two to fifteen days. So if you want to check the status of your visa, do so after this time has passed.
